Shine A Light: Gregg Allman

As far as white singers go, I don’t know if the blues ever had a finer voice than that of Gregg Allman. The blues came honestly, even if by his own hand.

Through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Gregg took the rock and roll lifestyle of induldgence and canked it off the scale. He has spent the last years trying to undo all the years of abuse.

For a fella once considering a career as a dentist a fateful gig in Mobile Alabama changed his path forever. Performing early on as The Allman Joys, then The Allman Brothers Band, that path packed in more life and craziness that most would see or want to see in 10 lifetimes.

But through addiction, sad untimely deaths of his brother Duane and fellow bandmate Barry Oakley, Gregg has survived. A man of the blues. A great writer and relfector of art.

Songs like “Melissa” and “Whipping Post” are classics that will live on long after he is gone. So my hat is off to Nashville born, Florida raised, Gregg Allman.
